Gareth Price - Retirement (41-50)
Once Gareth turned forty he was looking for something new to turn his attention to. Why triathlon? Who knows, maybe it was because he wasn't a very sporty kid but almost overnight the books started to arrive. Most from amazon.com with titles such as "The Triathlete's Training Bible", "Becoming an Ironman", "Training Plans for Multisport Athletes", "Marathon - The Ultimate Training Guide", "Total Immersion", "How to go fast", "How to go faster " and the list goes on. They could be found all over the house, light reading for every toilet break. And so began the next passion of Gareth's life, triathlon.
He taught himself to run and swim and thank goodness he could already bike (a little at least). Over the next few years, Gareth immersed himself in learning how to do all three sports to the best of his abilities. He was even prepared to take swimming tips from his son. He entered his first half ironman triathlon in 2001 and worked up to the big event in 2003 when his whole family turned out to see him finish his first full Ironman Triathlon (3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42km run) at Forster. It was exhausting just watching (for over 9 hours).
While Gareth slowly wound his business activities up and focussed more and more on his sporting pursuits, early retirement became a strong ambition. Several things conspired to make the decision to move to Queensland a very attractive one.
- Dylan was one year off starting high school and we lived a long drive from our schools of choice,
- the software product that Gareth worked with was coming to the end of its life cycle,
- a house that the family had holidayed in and loved was on the market,
- by selling Bayview, Gareth could retire comfortably to Queensland and pursue his newfound love of sport.
So in 2004, Bayview was sold and in January of 2005 the family started a new chapter in a lovely riverside home on the Gold Coast of Queensland.
The Gold Coast is still a haven for holiday makers and the move did not impact Gareth's close ties to Sydney. The house is often full of friends and family who make the regular trip. In fact, the first year of life in Queensland felt like we were running a hotel with visitors, on average, one week in every four. We still enjoy having visitors stay, so please keep making the effort and visit us.
Life in Queensland is good. The kids are settled, the pace is slower and Gareth has made more wonderful friends.
Here's to the next fifty years and where ever the wind takes us...
Happy Birthday, Gareth Price.
